Research and development

Measuring batteries closely enough to predict them.

Retron develops its own battery algorithms and test methods. We work from the cell upward: cell data, pack data, thermal behaviour, and the models that estimate state of charge, state of health and remaining life.

Research areas

What we work on.

Status tags show what runs today and what is still being developed.

BMS monitoring screen with state of charge gauge

State of charge (SOC)

Estimating how much energy is left in a cell or pack, from voltage, current and temperature data.

In development
Cell testing platform showing capacity retention and grade

State of health (SOH)

Tracking how far a cell or pack has aged, using capacity and internal resistance measurements.

In development
Battery cells under test

Remaining useful life (RUL)

Predicting how many cycles a pack has left, built on degradation data from real cells.

In development
Cell testing station

Cell-level analysis

Internal resistance, open-circuit voltage, capacity retention and coulombic efficiency, recorded for each cell.

Running in our labs
Thermal image to be added

Thermal imaging

Thermal camera studies of cells and packs to find hot spots during charge and discharge.

Running in our labs
Programmable battery pack charge and discharge tester

Pack-level analysis

Programmed charge and discharge cycles on assembled packs, with DCIR, capacity and thermal results.

Running in our labs
Battery pack emulator with 16 cells and BMS monitor

BMS and emulator hardware

In-house BMS electronics and firmware, and a patent-pending battery pack emulator (BPE-16S) for testing BMS behaviour.

Developed in-house
SOC, SOH and RUL algorithms are in active development. We publish validated accuracy figures only after validation is complete.
How the research flows

One data chain, from cell to prediction.

1. Cell testsBarcode-tracked IR, OCV, capacity and grade for every cell
2. Pack testsProgrammed cycles and DCIR on assembled packs
3. Thermal imagingHeat patterns during charge and discharge
4. AlgorithmsSOC, SOH and RUL models trained on this data
5. ValidationModels checked against fresh pack tests
Where it happens

A working lab, not a simulation.

Our research runs on the same benches we install in colleges: cell testers, pack cyclers, thermal cameras and our own monitoring software.

  • Multi-channel cell testing and grading
  • Programmable pack charge and discharge
  • Thermal camera inspection
  • Data logged by Retron software for later analysis
